Q. Why Latham School?

A. The Latham School has been working with students with Prader Willi Syndrome for more than 25 years. Latham provides educational, vocational, clinical, nursing and dietary services for boys and girls. Our students live in small group residences on or near our campus in Brewster, MA

Q. Does Latham School accept out of state referrals?


A. YES. We have students from several states, and are interested in speaking to referring agencies from your state.

Q. What kind of education will my child receive at the Latham School?

A. Students with PWS attend the Latham School; alicensed private special needs school, located on abeautiful campus on Cape Cod. Class instruction is based on a student’s individual ability and learning style. A maximum of 8 students are in each class. Our vocational program offers opportunities for students to practice job skills in a safe environment. Our students currently work at a variety of community business such as a popular local nursery and real estate company.
Q. What does my student do during the summer?

A. Latham School has a very unique summer program called Summertide, which keeps much needed structure in kids’ daily routines, and offers fun classes like drama, arts& crafts, woodworking, karaoke, walking club, and more. In addition, there are exciting day trips to places like the New England Aquarium, Whale Watches, and Cape Cod League baseball games. Students also play, relax and swim at nearby beaches and lakes.
Q. Where will my son/daughter live?

A. The PWS boys live in Simpkins Cottage, a house located within short walking distance from the campus. The PWS girls ages live together in the Sandcastle, a residential cottage on campus. We accept boys ages 12-22 and girls ages 8-22.
Q. How will you help my son/daughter reach his/her goal weight?

A. Latham School uses a 5-week menu plan based on the Prader-Willi Food Pyramid. The menu plan allows students to eat “normal” foods in healthy proportions with items like veggie lasagna rollups, smoothies, muffins, and so much more! In addition, students exercise daily for at least 30 minutes doing a variety of activities to keep them interested and moving.

Q. What other social/recreational activities will my son/daughter enjoy?

A. Cape Cod is a beautiful place to live! And that’s just the beginning! Latham School takes part in many Special Olympics activities including swimming, fishing, track & field, bowling, soccer, and basketball. Weattend dances with other schools; have an annual carnival, clam bake and other fun activities like “Red Sox Nation Day.”

Q. What is the admission process?

A. We invite parents and interested parties to visit our campus, contact us and request materials to learn more about our program. Once we receive areferral from a school or social service agency, we review the materials, interview your son/daugh- ter, and invite them to campus for a 24-hour visit. After the visit, a team of supervisors makes the final decision on admission.
