Gilbough Prader-Willi Program

Serving Adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome

Latham has been providing education, vocational, and residential services to individuals with Prader- Willi Syndrome (PWS)since 1980. Today the Gilbough Program continues to be one of the lead- ing residential treatment centers in the country specifically designed to meet the unique needs of individuals with PWS. It is our belief that individuals with PWS can lead healthy and fulfilling lives when provided with the necessary behavioral and dietary controls, while supporting them in making healthy life-style choices. Twenty-four hour staff support is provided to meet the individual’s unique medical, behavioral, and emotional needs.

The goal of the Gilbough Program is to provide as normalized and independent a living and learning experience as possible within the parameters of the syndrome. Our staff works with each individual to create and support a service plan that is based on their personal interests and personal goals. The majority of our residents live in community homes with other housemates, supported by staff. Some of our individuals have transitioned into a more independent “shared-living” experience with local family providers.

A major objective of the Gilbough Program is to promote the development of daily living skills as astrategy to achieving a less restrictive, more independent lifestyle. Staff provides support and guidance ranging from personal hygiene, self-care and home-care tasks, to doing their own banking and shopping.

Exercise and diet is also a major component of the Gilbough Program. All of the individuals in the Gilbough Program adhere to a nutritious, calorie controlled diet/menu, based on the PWSfood pyramid and correlation between their individual body weight and caloric intake. One of our staff nurses created this special diet in consultation with a nutritionist and with the active input of individuals in the program and their staff.

Vocational supports provided by Gilbough staff allow our residents to access various education, employment, volunteer and other vocational reha- bilitation opportunities within the community in which they reside. The individuals are encouraged to explore experiences that will enhance social skills, and offer new opportunities to recreate and socialize with others whom they can form healthy, adult relationships. It is based on this experience and commitment that the Gilbough Program continues to explore new and innovative ways to promote each persons fulfillment as a member of their community without sacrificing the structure and supports necessary to keep them safe.
